Carcassonne

De oude stad kun je vrij bezoeken. Voor het kasteel en de omwallingen heb je een kaartje nodig. Houd in het hoogseizoen rekening met flinke wachtrijen. Door vooraf te reserveren, voorkom je dit trouwens. Een wandeling door de stad is ook een leuke optie, eventueel met gids.

Nîmes

Nîmes is niet alleen een gezellige studentenstad, maar ook een van de mooiste plaatsen van Zuid-Frankrijk. Het prachtige historische centrum is al bijna 2.000 jaar oud. Een van de bewijzen hiervan is Les Arènes, een arena uit de eerste eeuw waar vroeger gladiatoren vochten en publieke executies werden uitgevoerd. Tegenwoordig wordt de arena gebruikt voor concerten en stierengevechten.

Een van de best bewaarde Romeinse tempels, het Maison Carrée, stamt ook uit de eerste eeuw. En in de Jardin de la Fontaine vind je restanten van een Romeins badencomplex uit de tweede eeuw.

Lagrasse

Lagrasse, near Carcassonne, is a village rich in medieval remnants. It lies along the banks of the Orbieu River. Crossing a beautiful stone bridge, you enter the old village center, with a famous large medieval abbey on the opposite bank. In the village itself, you can explore the 14th-century market halls.
