1 - Canoeing along the Dordogne river

The Dordogne is not only a department, it is also a river, winding through the heart of the region and traversing the landscape. Canoeing on the Dordogne River is therefore one of the most popular activities for visitors who want to discover the region from a different perspective. Plus, it provides some much-needed cooling, which is great in summer. 

2 - The caves of Lascaux

In 1940, a fascinating discovery was made in Dordogne: murals were discovered on the rock walls of a cave in a remote valley on the Vézère river. This find proved to be of enormous historical significance. Indeed, the oldest paintings in the Lascaux caves date back to around 15,000 BC! Because of their historical value, the Lascaux Caves have been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. That designation alone is worth visiting once. 

3 - Visit the village of Belvès

Belvès is one of the most beautiful and charming villages in the Dordogne, situated on a hilltop and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The medieval village can be recognised by its many cosy cottages and impressive half-timbered buildings that reflect the region's history. Take a tour of the village and you will feel like a medieval Frenchman for a moment. A work of art in itself. 

4 - Visit the castles of Castelnaud-La-Chapelle

The Dordogne is known for its impressive castles. In picturesque Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, you can even contemplate two castles from the 12th century against each other.  Strategically located on either side of the Dordogne River, these castles, Castelnaud and Beynac, offer breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. 

Its rich military history also makes this place a so-called must-visit. During the Hundred Years' War, for example, both castles faced each other, with Castelnaud being in English hands and Beynac in French hands, leading to many battles between the two armies. Very impressive! 

5 - Visit the capital of prehistory

You read it right, the capital of prehistory. In the Dordogne, you will find the famous Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, a small village recognised worldwide as the centre of prehistory. This region is home to an incredible collection of prehistoric sites, caves and artefacts that offer a unique insight into the lives of our ancestors. 

For example, visit the many famous caves, the Musée National de Préhistoire and the many other educational sites you will encounter here. 

6 - Discover the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac

Another beautiful village absolutely worth a visit. Beynac-et-Cazenac is a medieval gem that rises proudly along the Dordogne River. The village is best known for the imposing Château de Beynac, a castle that towers over the village and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and river. The castle has been there since the 12th century, but still looks outstanding. A must-see for history buffs. 

7 - Visit medieval Domme

Let's finish with a third village: Domme. This unique town has several city gates and an impressive old city wall that reflects its rich history. Located high above the Dordogne River, it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Breathtaking! 

One of Domme's highlights is the Place de la Halle, a beautiful square surrounded by historic buildings and an old market hall, where you can soak up the local atmosphere. A wine or other delicacy is of course not to be missed.
