Climate & best time to visit France: when are you going?

France is always a good idea. But when exactly? That depends on what you're looking for: sun & sea, peace & nature, or wine & conviviality. With so many different regions and climates, France is literally a country for all seasons. And whether you're going for spring in Provence, a summer dip in the Atlantic Ocean, or autumn colors in the Dordogne, there is a perfect time to travel. For everyone.
In this blog, we'll help you on your way. We'll take you through the seasons, regions, and surprising choices. Ready for some travel inspiration?

France by season: what can you expect?

Let's start with the basics: what does France look like throughout the year? Each season has its charm. But also its character.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is perhaps France's best-kept secret. While the north is still a little chilly, the sun is already shining in the south. In April, you can often sit on a terrace in your T-shirt in Provence, Languedoc, or the Côte d'Azur. Blooming lavender, singing birds, and few tourists make this the perfect time for those seeking peace and quiet, hikers, and bon vivants.

Bonus: Holiday houses in France are still affordable during this period.

Summer (June-August)

Summer in France is in full swing. July and August are warm throughout the country, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius, depending on where you are. Southern France is hot and dry, perfect for beach days and lounging by the pool. Northern France and the Atlantic coast offer slightly milder temperatures, ideal for families with young children.

The downside? It's peak season. So it's busier, more expensive, and you have to book well in advance. Fortunately, Basic-Travel has plenty of vacation homes in France, including in quiet regions such as Auvergne and Corrèze.

Autumn(September-November)

Ah, late summer. Actually the favorite of many connoisseurs. The sea is still warm, the vineyards are turning golden, and most of the tourists have left. In the south, you can often still eat outside until the end of October. In the Alps or Vosges, it's perfect for long walks among the autumn leaves. Wine lover? Then go in September, when the grapes are harvested and the wineries are open for tastings.

Winter (December-February)

France in winter is twofold. On the one hand, you have the Alps and Pyrenees, where you can enjoy fantastic skiing. On the other hand, southern France has mild, sunny winters (averaging 10-15 degrees in January). Ideal for those who want to escape the cold in the Netherlands without having to fly. Would you like to stay in comfort in the south? Then book a vacation home with a fireplace and a view of the hills. It doesn't get any more romantic than that.

The climate per region in France

France is large and varied. From coast to mountains, from city to countryside. Below, we list the climate and the corresponding travel season for each region:

Southern France(Provence, Côte d’Azur, Languedoc)

Summery, sunny, and dry. This is the place to be from April to October. July and August are extremely hot, so go earlier or later if you don't like extreme heat. Perfect for beach vacations, village hopping, and admiring lavender fields.

Atlantic coast (Brittany, Vendée, Bordeaux)

Sea, wind, and changeable weather. It is nice and breezy here, even in summer, and less hot than on the Mediterranean. July and August are the most popular, but June and September are also nice. And quieter.

Inland (Dordogne, Auvergne, Limousin)

Continental climate: warm summers, cool winters. May through September are the best months, with June as a secret tip: green, sunny, and still wonderfully quiet. Ideal for cyclists, hikers, and those seeking peace and quiet.

Alps en Pyrenees

Summer: ideal for active vacations (hiking, climbing, mountain lakes). Winter: great for skiing and snow fun. June and September are great for outdoor activities without the crowds.

Best to travel by type of vacationer

For sun worshippers: June to August in the south of France.
For those seeking peace and quiet: May or September inland.
For sports enthusiasts: June or September in the mountains.
For families with school-age children: July and August, preferably on the Atlantic coast or in the Dordogne.
For wine lovers: September in Burgundy or Bordeaux.

An unexpected favorite: Italy

Want something a little different, but still with sun, atmosphere, and good food? Then take a look at our holiday houses in Italy. Think: Tuscan hills, Umbria in spring, or Sardinia in September. Slightly different from France, but just as tempting.

Climate & comfort: choose you vacation home wisely

Would you like to be in Provence in the middle of summer? Or in the Dordogne in March? Your stay makes all the difference. Choose a house with a swimming pool if you are going in July.
