Tuscany's beauty in the big cities

All of Tuscany's beauty starts in its major cities. They are all centrally located in the region, making it perfect for a day or city trip. From your holiday home you can easily reach the bustling city of Florence by car or train, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the ancient squares of Siena. Each city in Tuscany has something unique, where will you go?

Inspiring Florence

Florence, also called Firenze among Italians, is one of the region's most charming cities. This Renaissance city is the city of magnificent palaces, iconic architecture, and ancient art. The cathedral, the ‘Duomo’, is the highlight of the city, both for its imposing painted dome on the inside, and the stunning view from a great height.
But don't forget the Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Museum where all the beauty of Tuscany comes together. Florence's beauty and versatility have inspired many an artist. A visit to the city will certainly not disappoint you.

City of art and culture Pisa

Of course, we all know the Leaning Tower of Pisa: the iconic structure where visitors take the most creative photos and it looks like they are ‘pushing’ or ‘leaning’ against the tower. But did you know that city of Pisa is also a very creative city? It is a true city of art where you can find a lot of culture. You can already do so in the great square of wonders, the Piazza dei Miracoli, where, besides the tower of Pisa, you can also spend time in the Duomo di Pisa cathedral and the Baptistery.

Charming Lucca

Lucca is one of Italy's richest cities and this is reflected everywhere, both in its 100 churches and its cosy centre. The city owes its charm to Roman times and shows a piece of pure Italy. The famous Torre Guinigi is the city's highest tower and a climb to the top is well worth it. Besides the wonderful views over Lucca, at the highest point you will end up at a special roof garden, where you can overlook the city centre through the trees.

The centuries-old city of Siena

The city of Siena often falls short of other big cities like Florence and Pisa when it comes to choices, but this ancient city has just the thing for something special. The historic city centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and there is plenty to do around the famous shell-shaped square. Like the Palio di Siena, a historic horse race in the Piazza del Campo, held twice a year.
The beautiful views, the location at the top of the hills and the openness of the inhabitants really show off the city's charms. In addition, the city has always been a popular film location, where the likes of ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ were filmed.

An authentic piece of Italy can be found in Arezzo. It is the city of goldsmithing where, if you look carefully, you can still find some workshops making gold jewellery. Furthermore, in the medieval fortified city you can stroll at a leisurely pace through the narrow streets, discover the cathedrals and squares or stroll around the charming antique market. The Piazza Grande, for instance, is transformed into a lively market every first Saturday and Sunday of the month.

The remarkable port city of Livorno

On the coast of Tuscany, close to the cities of Pisa and Lucca, you will find the quaint port city of Livorno. Part of Livorno is also called ‘Venezia Nuova’, freely translated the new Venice. With its similar bridges and narrow waters through which small boats make their way, the city has the charm of the real Venice. Furthermore, Livorno's fortress is the heart of town, where many open-air concerts are held in summer. It is a surprising place and great for a day of wandering around.
